Our New Spaceship

The long wait is finally over! We got the link to configure our Model X!

It was fun to select the options – the few there are for a Signature Model X, and complete the design. We still had two questions and sent off an email to Tesla. Within less than 2 minutes, I got a call from Tesla and my questions were answered. Awesome service!

Here is what our new baby will look like:

For those of you who still go “tire-kicking” at dealership to buy a car; here is the process ordering a car  with Tesla.

The process is straight forward a while after Model has been in production.  Go to  http://www.teslamotors.com, click ‘ORDER YOUR MODEL S’, choose your options, click ORDER, pay a small deposit, enter some details and you are done. The process is just the same should you decide to go to a Tesla ‘showroom’. Now you have one week to ponder if you want to make changes. After that time, your order is scheduled for production and the supplier parts are being ordered.

However, there are a few extra hurdles to take for those of us crazy enough to order a Signature SeriesTesla.

Tesla holds a reveal event for a new model, about 3 years before production starts.  The reveal event for the Model X was  waaaayyyyy back in February 2012. At the event Tesla has computers set up so you can reserve the new car there and then. You get the choice to reserve a regular production model or a Signature Version. Only 1000 Signature cars will be built. All Signatures come with all options – no cheapos here- and you have the privilege of handing over a big chunk of money years ($40,000 for the Model X) years before you get the car .

I was late to the party, as I ‘only’ got interested in Tesla in 2014. So all Signatures were long gone. A few days after getting my Model S in June 2014, I reserved a Model X. I was about number 15,000 in the growing list of Tesla Reservation Holders. I sneakily asked about the Signature List to jump to the head of the line. “Sold out, but we can put you on a wait list.” I was hopeful, but nothing ever happened, so I forgot. Then middle of November 2015 I had a message from Tesla  to call back. “Do you want to take the option to get a Signature Model X? Yes- of course!” So I increased my deposit to the Signature deposit value. But, I would see my Model X within a few months, not in years like most other Signature reservation holders. How lucky can I get?

Now the waiting started in earnest. You have to wait for THAT email with THE link to do your configuration. I kept annoying my delivery advisor in Fremont with phone calls and emails asking when I can expect my configuration link. Many Americans, even mere production reservation holders, were excitedly blogging and posting about configuring their cars and how much fun they were having. As a Canadian, I had to be patient, but fortunately less patient then those in Europe or Asia. They have to wait until way into 2016.

On Dec 28, I found THIS email:

I jumped right onto it and had my Model X configured in no time at all. All Signature Series cars come fully decked out. Since I had beeen following everything that people had written, twittered, ‘youtubed’, ‘facebooked’, and ‘user-forumed’, I could have done this blindly.  I was left to select the paint color (Signature Red), wheel size (20″), Ludicrous (yes), six or seven seats (seven), cold weather package (yes), and tow package (yes).

But what to do about the leather seat color? Agony!

  • Easy-to-care-for black leather seats, or
  • Fancy-looking tan leather seats?

Typical first world problem. I had been discussing this for weeks with friends and relatives.

Can somebody help please? What do you think? Time is running out.

  1. Difficult question! But the good thing is there’s no right or wrong. Either way will be fine. So ask your gut feeling. If that doesn’t help you might as well take a closer look at your current seats and ask yourself if you’re happy with them. I personally must agree that the tan leather seats really look fancy but if the roof lining will be tan as well it might be a bit too much. I think I would go for the black seats.

  2. Looking at the headliner along with the seats I would suggest the black seats light headliner as 1. it keeps the interior brighter when sitting looking out 2.you once told me that you do haul things from the hardware store so easier to keep clean.

    • Thanks Rick. That is what I ordered in the end. I decided not to haul things from the hardware store with the MX. It has a trailer hitch. However, how long will this resolution last? I don’t know.
